The Dore program-What It Is All About

Named after his founder, entrepreneur Wynford Dore, the Dore program was established to improve some basic skills which include reading and writing, social skills, attention and focus and sport performance through the use of some targeted physical activities.

Criticisms Of The Dore Program

The program, which has proven to be successful by a lot of people, has also faced major critics, its validity being disputed by people who believe that the study does not meet the randomized controlled trial criteria.

How Did The Dore Program Come About?

The Dore program, (previously referred to as the dyslexia dyspraxia Attention treatment) was founded by businessman Wynford Dore.

His daughter, Sue has been diagnosed with severe dyslexia and after being told that there was no cure for such a condition, she became depressed,   which led to several suicide attempts in her early twenties.

Looking For A Cure

Winfred later decided to work with a team of researchers to look deeper into the condition. Inspired by Harold Levinson who claimed that this type of condition originates from the cerebellum, Winfred came up with treatments that were meant to control the situation and although it was not in any way drug related, it was proved to be practicable.

His friend, Roy suggested that the cause of Sue’s problem was probably an underdeveloped cerebellum. As a result, The Dore program was developed for her and after she was able to read and write, it was made available for other people to also benefit from the program.

A video released by Dore claimed that some conditions, which include dyslexia, ADD, autism development coordination disorder and Asperger syndrome, are usually linked to cerebella function. He believed that the Dore program will make it possible to treat difficulties in the following areas;

  • Reading
  • Attention
  • Social skills
  • Coordination

The treatment works by developing the above neutral pathways.

How The Dore Treatment Works

The Dore method theory narrates that reading and writing skills are learned by practice. These skills become automatic because the cerebellum allows them to occur at the highest rate of efficiency. It goes ahead to claim that as the skills become more automatic, the working memory that is required to perform a task decreases. The program therefore, aimed to stimulate cerebrum development, hence strengthening communication between the cerebrum and cerebellum.

Suitability Of The Program

The program requires their clients to be 7 years or older. For younger clients, Dore and his team claim that it would be difficult for them to be accurately assessed. The program is believed to be more suitable for older clients, of different ages.

Is The Program Effective?

The first study, which was meant to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, reported improvements in reading, writing and comprehension of school going children. A follow up study, published in Dyslexia reevaluated the improvements in those children and reported positive results too. But as much as a lot of people are believed to have benefitted from the program, its effectiveness is highly disputed too.
